Mehlis in Syria to interview officials

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- International investigators into the slaying of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri headed to Damascus Tuesday to interview Syrian witnesses.

Lebanon's National News Agency said that the chief investigator, German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis, and his team traveled to Damascus in a high security convoy, escorted by the Lebanese army all the way to the Syrian border.

Mehlis is expected to interview Syrian security officials who were operating in Lebanon before Damascus pulled out its troops and intelligence personnel from its smaller neighbor last April, ending 29 years of a controversial presence.

At a press conference last month, Mehlis said he had no Syrian suspects in the Feb. 14 assassination of Hariri in a massive Beirut blast, but only witnesses so far.
