KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Violence has claimed the life of another candidate in Afghanistan's parliamentary election.

Officials said Abdul Hadi, from the southern Afghan province of Helmand, was killed by Taliban militants outside his home early Friday morning.

A Taliban spokesman, Abdul Latif Hakimi, told local and international media outlets Hadi was killed by the Taliban because "he was an American supporter" and a candidate for the parliament, known in the Pashtun language as the Wolesi Jirga, or "House of People."

Hadi was the seventh Wolesi Jirga candidate to be killed during the lead-up to the Sept. 18 elections.

The Taliban ruled most of Afghanistan from the mid-1990s until their overthrow by U.S. forces in November 2001.
