SAN ANGELO, Texas, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- A 95-year-old Texas man has been arrested for allegedly attacking a 10-year-old girl with a screwdriver.

Malcolm Orum, who uses a wheelchair and walks only with a cane, was arrested Aug. 17 at his home north of San Angelo and spent 12 days in Tom Green County jail.

''There's something really wrong with the system when you're willing to put a 94-year-old man in jail,'' said Michelle Krogstad, the girlfriend of Orum's grandson. The grandson, Krogstad and her four children live with Orum, who turned 95 on Sept. 7.

Authorities were told that Orum became violent when Krogstad and her daughter, Michallyna, 10, tried to find a binder for school in his bedroom, the San Angelo Standard Times said.

He reportedly grabbed a screwdriver and tried to stab the child. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
