N.Y. principal removed in money scandal

NEW YORK, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- A New York high school principal has been removed for allegedly urging parents to lie to get more federal school lunch money, the New York Post reported.

The newspaper said it had obtained a letter in which Maurice Collins, in his second year as principal at the highly respected Randolph High School, instructed parents to falsely report low incomes on National School Lunch Program applications.

The letter also threatened to withhold transportation for students whose parents did not turn in the forms.

The letter said Randolph High School stood to gain $1 million from the federal program if 90 percent of parents filled out the lunch-subsidy applications.

Michael Best, counsel to New York Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, called the scheme "completely unacceptable" and said Collins had been removed pending an investigation.

The federal Food and Nutrition Service also said it would investigate the scheme.
