Britain demands payback from pensioners

LONDON, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- The British government is trying to collect hundreds or thousands of pounds from elderly Scottish residents who wrongly received disability payments.

The pensioners were paid either 45.55 pounds or 60.60 pounds a week ($85 or $112) for home care while eligible for free care under a Scottish program, The Scotsman reported.

Terry Moran, head of the Disability and Carers Service, said an investigation has uncovered about 200 people receiving improper payments.

Shona Robison, a health care spokeswoman for the Scottish National Party, said the 2001 ruling denying the benefit for home care to Scottish pensioners was based on spite.

"You cannot alarm the most vulnerable members of our community with demands for money they most likely do not have," she said.
