U.S. sports teams donate hurricane relief

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Professional and collegiate sports teams have mounted financial relief campaigns for three hurricane-battered southeastern U.S. states.

The New York Yankees and the National Football League announced they were each donating $1 million to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

In the NFL, Houston Texans owner Bob McNair pledged to contribute up to $1 million to the disaster relief to match all contributions from the Houston community, USA Today reported.

Within the National Basketball Association, the players association and the league are working to together to raise at least $1 million in aid. The Indiana Fever, Milwaukee Bucks and San Antonio Spurs are collecting donations as well.

In the National Hockey League, the Dallas Stars and the Mighty Ducks gave $10,000 and $20,000, respectively to the Red Cross.
