Terror suspect says two could clear him

LODI, Calif., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- A California man accused of lying to the FBI about Pakistan terror training says two men about to be deported could clear him.

An attorney for Umer Hyatt, 47, a naturalized U.S. citizen of Pakistani origin who lives in Lodi, Calif., says the two men, Islamic religious leaders, had made helpful remarks about Umer and his 22-year-old son Hamid.

The Hyatts face charges of lying to the FBI about the son's reported attendance at a terrorist training camp near the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. Both men were denied bail at a hearing last week.

Umer Hyatt's attorney, Johnny Griffin, said that the two imams, who are being deported for overstaying their religious-worker visas, made potentially exculpatory statements about his client.
