Chirac urges Lebanon action on Hezbollah

PARIS, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- French President Jacques Chirac called on Lebanon Monday to implement international resolutions on disarming Hezbollah and deploying the army in the south.

"A lot should be done to ensure the implementation of (U.N.) resolutions 1559, 1595 and 1614 which should be applied fully," Chirac said.

He stressed that Syria, the former power broker in Lebanon which was forced to pull out its military in April, has a chance at present to improve relations with Lebanon.

Under the resolutions, Lebanon is requested to disarm Hezbollah and armed Palestinian groups, deploy the Lebanese army on the border with Israel to ensure regional security and cooperate with an international commission probing the Feb. 14 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

"The Lebanese authorities have great reforms to introduce and the international community is ready to back them in order to help Lebanon regain its full sovereignty and control over security," Chirac said.
