Japan to dispatch experts to Lebanon

TOKYO, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Japan will send criminal identification experts to Lebanon to assist in the investigation into the February assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

The U.N. International Independent Investigation Commission recruited three criminal identification experts from the Tokyo police department to assist in the Hariri case. It is the first time for Japanese police to assist such a U.N. investigation.

"Japan has been closely watching the situation in the Middle East region including Lebanon from the standpoint that Japan's peace and prosperity is directly connected to the peace and stability in the region. The dispatch is one way Japan seeks to contribute to the stability of the Middle East region," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release Thursday.
