Iraq on policy makers' minds

WASHINGTON, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Iraq headlined the Sunday morning talk shows, with Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., comparing the war to Vietnam.

Hagel, a Vietnam veteran, said on ABC's "This Week," the administration "must start figuring out how we can get out of there."

On Fox News, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., called on President Bush to convince U.S. voters of his Iraq policy. Graham said he is concerned by the slippage in public support for Bush and the war in Iraq.

"We need to get this right," he said. "This decision about to be made in Iraq regarding a constitution is hugely important to us."

Bush plans a series of stops across the country this week to talk about the war, starting with the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Utah, Voice of America reports.

Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis. -- who last week called on Bush to set a target date for withdrawing troops from Iraq -- said on NBC's "Meet The Press" a target is not the same as a hard deadline. He suggested that most of the achievements of U.S. policy, including the recent elections in Iraq, have come from having a goal to shoot for.
