SAN DIEGO, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Federal prosecutors in San Diego are seeking forfeiture of a home belonging to Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that in court papers the U.S. Attorney's Office contends the house in Rancho Santa Fe was purchased with illegal profits from Cunningham's sale of his previous home. That house was bought by a defense contractor, Mitchell Wade, who immediately resold it at a $700,000 loss, and the deal is currently being investigated by a federal grand jury.
Cunningham also lived on Wade's yacht in Washington.
Cunningham, a Republican who has served eight terms in Congress, is not seeking another term in Congress. He and his wife have put their five-bedroom house on the market for $3.5 million.
The newspaper said the lawsuit has not been recorded with the court, but the U.S. Attorney's Office has filed a notice with the county of a claim on the property.
