'Person of interest' hangs himself in cell

CAMP HILL, Pa., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania man suspected of involvement in the disappearance of two women hanged himself in his prison cell.

Investigators have described Steven Martin as a "person of interest" in the investigation into the fate of Phylicia Thomas and Jennifer Barziloski. He was serving a sentence of 51 months to 126 months for manslaughter for killing a woman in a hit-and-run crash while he was trying to escape from police.

Martin was found hanging in his cell in the state prison in Camp Hill Wednesday morning, the Wilkes-Barre Times reported. He died Thursday at the Hershey Medical Center.

Martin's death does not end the investigation, State Police Sgt. Richard Krawetz said.

Martin admitted knowing both the missing women but continually denied knowing anything about what happened to them. While he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and apologized, he said in a later interview police harassment was partly to blame for the fatal crash.
