Report:Great Train Robber picks up MRSA

LONDON, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- The man believed to have pulled of Britain's Great Train Robbery in 1963 is reportedly ill with MRSA, a hospital-induced infection.

Ronnie Biggs, 76, may have contracted the superbug while undergoing "routine treatment" at a London hospital, the Sky News reported Wednesday.

The report said Biggs, who has suffered minor heart attacks in the past, receives 24-hour nursing care at Belmarsh Prison, London.

A British government spokeswoman said: "We can confirm a prisoner at HMP Belmarsh attended the local hospital recently for routine treatment.

"Following this procedure, the prisoner developed a local infection and subsequent tests showed this to be MRSA," the report said.

Biggs has undergone initial treatment for the bug and will have further tests to check if he has been cleared of it, Sky News said.

Biggs returned to Britain in 2001 after 35 years on the run following the train robbery.
