Smart's sister interviewed on kidnapping

SALT LAKE CITY, July 21 (UPI) -- The sister of Elizabeth Smart, who saw the girl kidnapped from their Salt Lake City home, says she didn't seek immediate help because she feared being taken.

In an interview with ABC News' "Primetime," Mary Katherine Smart said she saw her sister being led out of their bedroom but she couldn't clearly see who was taking Elizabeth. It was some time later she went to her parents to say Elizabeth was gone.

"I thought, you know, be quiet, because if he hears you, he might take you, too, and you're the only person who has seen this. I was, like, shaking," Mary Katherine told ABC's Diane Sawyer.

Mary Katherine, however, gave authorities a break in finding the suspect in the kidnapping when she was looking at a book four months later and she thought of a handyman who had worked on the Smarts' house.

Elizabeth Smart, then 14, was kidnapped in June 2002. She was found about nine months later about 15 miles from her home. Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee have been charged with kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, aggravated burglary and attempted aggravated kidnapping. ABC said neither has yet been determined to be competent to stand trial.
