Thieves in Moscow kill guard, steal $1M

MOSCOW, July 14 (UPI) -- Three robbers who held up an armored truck outside a Moscow bank killed a guard and escaped with more than $1 million in cash.

A police spokesman told the Moscow Times two men wearing ski masks and armed with Kalashnikovs surprised the guards as the truck stopped to make a delivery at a branch of Vneshprombank. A third man waited behind the wheel of a getaway car.

Two guards were shot. One, Alexander Nekrasov, died at the scene while the other was hospitalized with a wounded leg. The driver of the armored truck was not injured.

The thieves left the area littered with spent cartridges.

The robbery take included about $980,000 in U.S. currency, 20,000 euros ($24,000) and 8,000 rubles ($280).
