Cuba: Protesters speak out against Castro

HAVANA, July 13 (UPI) -- Dozens of protesters took to the streets of the Cuban capital Wednesday to demonstrate against communist leader Fidel Castro.

The BBC's Spanish service said the protesters shouted anti-Castro slogans in a rare show of force in a country where opposition parties are officially banned. The group also was commemorating the 1994 deaths of some 40 Cubans who died trying to flee the island.

Hundreds of pro-Castro protesters confronted the anti-Castro protesters, but there were no reports of violence.

In May, Cuban dissidents held an unprecedented meeting, the first time in 46 years Cuba's opposition announced publicly they were meeting.

Though the Cuban government did not interfere with the meeting, it prevented some from attending. Two European politicians scheduled to address the gathering were expelled from the country.
