Police: Accused kidnapper killed family

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho, July 7 (UPI) -- Idaho investigators believe the man accused of kidnapping Shasta Groene and her brother also killed their family.

Shasta, 8, told investigators Joseph Edward Duncan III was the only person involved, the Coeur d'Alene Press reported.

"I think there's a sense of relief, a sense of 'we got the right guy,'" said Capt. Ben Wolfinger of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department.

Wolfinger said Duncan is believed to have killed Brenda Groene, her boyfriend, Mark McKenzie, and her older son, Slade. Their bodies, bound and beaten, were found at their home in Coeur d'Alene in mid-May.

Shasta was rescued Saturday when an alert waitress at a Denny's restaurant in Coeur d'Alene spotted her eating with Duncan. Her brother, Dylan, is believed to be dead. The FBI is examining human remains found at a campsite in western Montana.

The girl told investigators she had not met Duncan, a Fargo, N.D., resident, before her abduction.

Duncan is formally charged with two counts of kidnapping.
