Iraq had about 875 attacks, India about 360 and Nepal about 320, the Financial Times reported.

About 19 percent of the terror incidents were attributable to Islamic extremists. Of the remainder, 25 percent were secular political attacks, while the reasons for 56 percent were unknown.

NCTC Director John Brennan said many failed efforts to attack the United States were not included in the numbers.

The center also unveiled a "Terrorism Knowledge Base" Web site, tkb.org, which allows the public to track the number and kind of terrorist incidents.
