HARARE, Zimbabwe, July 5 (UPI) -- The United Nations special envoy to Zimbabwe looking into evictions has extended her visit to the southern African country until Friday.

Anna Tibaijuka -- who is also the executive director of the U.N. Human Settlements Program, known as U.N. Habitat -- Tuesday went from the capital of Harare to Bulawayo, the nation's second largest city, scheduled to stop in Midlands Province, the U.N. agency said Tuesday.

At the request of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan she was examining humanitarian aspects of the evictions of thousands of poor from illegal housing and businesses.

Tibaijuka has been reviewing the government's arrangements for the displaced, and its provision of alternative housing and basic needs during the southern African winter.

She also has been monitoring the response of U.N. agencies and planned to visit the western Victoria Falls district, the agency said in a statement from its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

The U.N.-Habitat chief is expected to report to Annan immediately after her visit.
