ALBANY, N.Y., July 1 (UPI) -- New York state officials are investigating whether a book by "Son of Sam" serial killer David Berkowitz violates state law or prison rules.
Berkowitz pleaded guilty to killing six New York City women and injuring seven others in the 1970s. His prison journal entries, "Son of Hope: The Journals of David Berkowitz Vol. 1," are scheduled to be published as a book in September, reported the New York Post Friday.
Berkowitz was denied parole in 2002. He is serving a 25-year to life sentence in a New York prison.
Berkowitz is not subject to the "Son of Sam" law his case inspired -- banning convicted New York criminals from profiting by their crimes -- because his crimes occurred before the law was passed.
However, the state does have an agreement with his conservator that he would not do anything to profit from his crimes, said Joan Cusack, chairwoman of the state Crime Victims Board.
The state Department of Corrections is investigating because inmates are prohibited from running businesses from their jail cells, even if they are not profiting directly, said agency spokesman James Flateau.
