Raped doctor was 'hounded out of Pakistan'

LONDON, June 30 (UPI) -- A doctor whose rape set off tribal violence in Pakistan's southern province of Balochistan in January has said she is still terrified after her ordeal.

"I was threatened so many times in Pakistan that I still feel scared," said Shazia Khalid, who has moved to London, in an interview that the BBC reported Thursday.

Khalid was raped at a hospital managed by Pakistan Petroleum, the state-owned supplier of natural gas located in Sui in Balochistan. After the government absolved an army officer accused of the crime, violent clashes ensued between tribesmen and government security forces in which eight people died.

Khalid said she is not satisfied with the investigation into her case. "Instead of getting justice, I was hounded out of Pakistan. I never wanted to leave Pakistan, but I had no choice," she said.

"My whole career was destroyed, as was my husband's. That was why we left our country," she said.

Khalid has been invited to address a seminar in the United States on July 2 organized by the Asian-American Network Against Abuse of Women and will address the audience by telephone.
