Rafsanjani says hardliners spent funds

TEHRAN, June 25 (UPI) -- Defeated Iranian presidential candidate Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani Saturday accused conservatives in the government of using public funds against him.

Rafsanjani, who was defeated by Tehran conservative Mayor Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, made his accusation in a "message to the people" carried by the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

He said he will file a complaint to the supreme court that "tens of billions of public funds were spent to harm my reputation and family and for the illegal interference in the elections" through the state institutions.

But Security Minister Ali Younesi said the presidential election was "the most honest, secure and calmest held so far," adding no problems were reported during the two rounds of elections.

Ahmedinejad, 49, won nearly 62 percent of the vote, almost double the 8.5 million Rafsanjani got in the runoff, the Iranian interior ministry said.

The conservative president-elect said his overwhelming victory is a blow to Iran's enemies.
