Brazil: Dirceu denies roll in scandal

BRASILIA, Brazil, June 23 (UPI) -- Brazil's former chief of staff denied Thursday he knew about an alleged bribery scheme to pay off lawmakers to support presidential initiatives.

Jose Dirceu told a congressional investigation that he had no prior knowledge of the alleged payoffs.

Earlier this month, Federal Deputy Roberto Jefferson accused the administration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of paying some lawmakers a monthly kickback for their support in the Congress.

Though Jefferson failed to provide proof backing his accusations, Dirceu was among those implicated, prompting him to step down.
