Spanish officials angered by ETA remarks

MADRID, June 20 (UPI) -- Spanish official said Monday they considered an offer by the Basque separatist group ETA to not attack politicians part of their "sick game."

Angel Acebes, the secretary-general of the conservative Popular Party, said he was outraged that ETA was "trying to control the rules of the game."

On Sunday, a published statement by ETA urged socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to annul the non-partisan anti-terror pact.

In May the Spanish government voted to hold talks with ETA if they laid down their arms, though the Popular Party rejected the call.

ETA has been held responsible for more than 800 deaths since beginning its campaign for an independent Basque homeland in the 1960s.

Last week a bomb exploded near an airport in Spain and authorities blamed ETA for the blast.

In May, ETA was accused of at least three bombings including a truck bomb that detonated in Madrid May 25, injuring several people.
