Spain's new royal meets admirers

BARCELONA, Spain, June 9 (UPI) -- Spain's Princess Cristina Thursday introduced her new daughter and latest royal, Irene, to reporters.

The princess and Irene were greeted by more than 250 onlookers waiting outside the hospitals in Barcelona shouting their congratulations, El Mundo newspaper reported in its online edition.

Irene was born Sunday, weighing in at a healthy 8 pounds and measured nearly 20 inches.

She is the sixth grandchild of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and will be ninth in line to succeed to the throne in Spain.

Last month Spain's future queen, Princess Letizia, announced she was pregnant with her first child.

The first born of Princess Letizia and Crown Prince Felipe is due in November.

According to the Spanish constitution, however, that child may not automatically become the next in line for the throne. That privilege is reserved for the first born male, even if he has older female siblings.
