Spain gets new royal

BARCELONA, Spain, June 6 (UPI) -- Spain has added another member to its monarchy with the birth of baby Irene -- born to Princess Cristina and her husband, Inaki Urdagarin.

Irene was born Sunday afternoon in Barcelona, weighed in at a healthy 8.1 pounds and measured nearly 20 inches, El Mundo newspaper reported.

She is the sixth grandchild of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and will be ninth in line to succeed to the throne in Spain.

Last month Spain's future queen, Princess Letizia, announced she was pregnant with her first child.

The first born of Princess Letizia and Crown Prince Felipe is due in November.

According to the Spanish constitution, however, that child may not automatically become the next in line for the throne. That privilege is reserved for the first born male, even if he has older female siblings.
