French Socialists' crisis deepens

PARIS, June 6 (UPI) -- French Socialists remain in crisis without a unifying leader two days after former prime minister Laurent Fabius was booted out of the party's leadership.

Fabius infuriated the party's general secretary, Francois Hollande, by campaigning against the European constitution -- in defiance of the party's platform in favor of the treaty.

France became the first European country last week to reject the constitution in a referendum, followed by the Netherlands a few days later.

In an interview on France 2 TV, Hollande denied Fabius, the party's number two leader, had been sanctioned.

"We're trying to put in place a coherent direction, "Hollande said.

A poll published Monday in the leftist newspaper Liberation found that 71 percent of Socialist sympathizers believed the party was wrong in sanctioning members who campaigned against the EU constitution.
