Quick probe into Hariri slaying urged

BEIRUT, Lebanon, June 3 (UPI) -- Lebanese President Emile Lahoud Friday urged acceleration of an international probe into the Feb. 14 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Lahoud, whose pro-Syrian regime was accused of complicity in Hariri's slaying, assured chief international investigator Detlev Mehlis the government would cooperate with the probe and its team.

"The Lebanese and their friends around the world are looking forward and with confidence to the work of the investigation committee and hope it will start its activities as soon as possible especially that more than 3 months passed since the ugly crime," Lahoud said.

He also called on Mehlis and his investigation team to investigate Thursday's assassination of an anti-Syria Lebanese journalist who was killed in a car bomb.
