French diplomat killed in Haiti

PARIS, June 1 (UPI) -- France's honorary council to Haiti has been assassinated, the French Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday.

Paul-Henri Mourrai was shot dead Tuesday near the Haitian capital of Porte au Prince as he drove on a national highway controlled by armed bandits, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"He died a few hours later from his wounds," Foreign Ministry spokesman Jean-Baptiste Mattei added in the statement.

The French governnment said forces last year under UN mandate to help stabilize the troubled island nation, following the departure from power of former priest-turned-president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. #
