LINCOLN, Neb., June 1 (UPI) -- Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman announced Wednesday the selection of Chimney Rock to grace the state's commemorative U.S. quarter.
Heineman selected Chimney Rock over a design finalist depicting Ponca Indian Chief Standing Bear, the Omaha World-Herald reported.
"I chose Chimney Rock because I felt it best represented our state's pioneering spirit and cultural heritage," Heineman said. "It reflected the resolve, persistence and incomparable work ethic that our forbearers brought to the plains."
The U.S. Mint will begin circulating 500 million new Nebraska coins in March 2006. The Mint began producing state coins in 1999 in the order in which they joined the union. Nebraska was the 37th state to join in 1867.
