Bush meets with new OAS head

WASHINGTON, May 31 (UPI) -- President Bush met Tuesday with Miguel Insulza, the new secretary-general of the Organization of American States, to discuss the stability of the region.

An OAS statement said the leaders also discussed the upcoming OAS meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, next month.

Insulza was sworn in as the leader of the 34-nation OAS earlier this month.

The election of former Chilean interior minister to head up the OAS was filled with controversy.

Last month Insulza and Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez were locked in a dead heat for the position. In five separate ballots, the candidates both received 17 votes.

Derbez -- who was the United States' preferred candidate -- then bowed out of the race.
