Spain: Police say bombing not ETA's

MADRID, May 29 (UPI) -- Spanish police say an explosion last week at the tomb of former dictator Gen. Francisco Franco was not terror related.

Although an anonymous tipster claimed Friday's bomb was planted by the Basque separatist group ETA, authorities said they believe the group was not responsible, El Mundo reported.

ETA has, however, been blamed for several bombings this month including a car bomb in Madrid last week that injured 52.

The group -- considered by Spain to be a terrorist organization -- has been blamed for more than 800 deaths since beginning its campaign for an independent Basque homeland in the 1960s.

Earlier this month, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero offered to open a dialogue with ETA, a move conservative opposition lawmakers rejected. Parliament eventually agreed with the prime minister and voted to hold the talks.
