Sonia Gandhi heads Congress party, again

NEW DELHI, May 28 (UPI) -- Sonia Gandhi was unanimously re-elected president of the Congress Party that heads India's ruling coalition, Saturday.

Congress Central Election Authority Chairman Oscar Fernandes announced the result of the election, which Gandhi was favored to win, the Times of India reported.

"I declare Sonia Gandhi duly elected unopposed president of the Indian National Congress," he told party leaders gathered in New Delhi.

This will be Gandhi's third consecutive term as party chief. She told her colleagues that power should not allow them to take things easy, but should help brighten the party's prospects.
