Saudi says king's condition stable

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, May 28 (UPI) -- Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said Saturday that King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz was in good condition after undergoing tests at the hospital.

In the first public comment by an official on the monarch's health since he was taken to hospital Friday, Prince Saud said the Fahd was "stable and his test results are assuring."

A Royal Court official said that a number of Saudi princes visited the king at the King Faisal Specialized Hospital in the center of Riyadh.

The official said one of the physicians treating Fahd told him the monarch's condition was "improving, although slowly, and his temperature is now back to normal."

Medical sources said Friday the Saudi king was suffering from high fever and liquid in the lungs.

A government official denied media reports that the oil-rich kingdom had declared a state of high alert and canceled the vacations of the security forces when the king was taken to hospital.

King Fahd ruled the Arab country since 1982, but his half-brother, Crown Prince Abdullah, has been virtually running Saudi Arabia's affairs since the monarch suffered a stroke in 1995.
