UK terror threat level lowered

LONDON, May 26 (UPI) -- The British terrorism threat level has been lowered from "severe general" to "substantial" following the general election, government sources have said.

The BBC reported Thursday intelligence analysts had lowered the terror alert two weeks ago but still wanted the public to be on their guard.

The move reportedly comes after alleged terror plots were thwarted. However, no changes will be made to security measures.

The government refuses to publicly discuss the threat level, which is reviewed daily. But the Conservative Party says the public should be made aware of the situation.

Conservative Homeland Security spokesman Patrick Mercer told BBC News: "Why haven't we got a single minister for homeland security that can say look, people, actually things are a lot better so without taking your eye off the ball you can perhaps ease things off a little bit?"
