Brazil: Sao Paulo slammed by rains

SAO PAULO, May 26 (UPI) -- Torrential rains in Brazil's economic capital flooded streets and neighborhoods and brought parts of the city to a standstill.

At least five people were killed by flash floods and mudslides in many of Sao Paulo's "favelas" or slums.

Both the city and much of southern Brazil were pounded by several days of rain. Nearly half a foot of rain was recorded in Sao Paulo Wednesday, Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper reported.
