Peru: Ex-spy chief ordered deaths

LIMA, May 23 (UPI) -- The former secretary for Peru's ex-spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos says her boss ordered the deaths of two politicians and a cardinal.

The killings were ordered and carried out in 2000, said the secretary, La Republica newspaper reported Monday.

Montesinos is already serving 15 years in prison on a number of corruption charges and faces additional charges that could lengthen his sentence to life.

He was caught on videotape apparently trying to bribe an opposition politician.

The former spy chief also is accused by many of ordering the deaths of numerous political opponents at the behest of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who fled to Japan to avoid prosecution after resigning in November 2000.
