Candidates for Iran president announced

TEHRAN, May 23 (UPI) -- Out of more than 1,000 candidates, six men have been chosen by the Guardians Council to run for president of Iran, Radio Free Europe reports.

Tehran Mayor Mahmud Ahmadinejad; Ali Ardeshir-Larijani, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei; Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezai; former police chief Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf; reformist former speaker of Parliament Hojatoleslam Mehdi Karrubi; and Expediency Council Chairman and former President Ayatollah Ali-Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani have been allowed to run, Radio Farda and Iranian state television reported.

However, Guardians Council spokesman Gholam-Hussein Elham said Saturday the council's choices are not final until the Tuesday deadline, state radio reported.

Several reformists were angered their candidates were not included and some had threatened to boycott the election, Radio Farda reported.
