Israeli withdrawal decision final

DEAD SEA SHORES, Jordan, May 22 (UPI) -- Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Sunday the government's decision to withdraw from the Gaza Strip on time is final.

Shalom, speaking to reporters during the World Economic Forum in Jordan, said his government is facing problems from Jewish settlers in vacating the Gaza Strip settlements.

He said the government was using "calm and peaceful" ways to persuade the settlers to leave the area, but he ruled out the possibility the problem would lead to an Israeli civil war.

The Israeli government said it intends to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and vacate its settlements next August.

Shalom earlier met with Jordan's King Abdullah, who called on Israel to withdraw from all the territories it occupied in 1967.
