Cuban dissidents hold democracy talks

HAVANA, May 20 (UPI) -- An estimated 200 Cuban dissidents defied the law against political opposition Friday by holding a pro-democracy meeting.

The meeting was reportedly held at the home of one of meetings organizers. Among those in attendance as an observer was U.S. diplomat in Cuba James Cason, who played a videotaped message of support from President Bush.

Through the Cuban government did not interfere with Friday's meeting, it prevented some from attending.

Two European politicians were expelled Thursday from Cuba. The European Union lawmakers, Czech Karel Schwarzenberg and Arnold Vaatz of Germany, were scheduled to speak at the meeting.

"This is the typical behavior of a totalitarian state," said Schwarzenberg. "I did nothing against the law. They just didn't like the people I was visiting."

The meetings are scheduled to continue on Saturday.
