Archbishop of Quebec invites pope

QUEBEC CITY, May 20 (UPI) -- Organizers of the Roman Catholic International Eucharistic Conference in 2008 in Quebec City, Quebec, have invited Pope Benedict XVI to attend.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the archbishop of Quebec, said he had invited the pope when he was in Rome for the papal conclave. Ouellet said the pope had agreed to attend -- if God was willing, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.

"I have a close relationship to him and I think he will come," Ouellet said. "Really. I am positive about that. He will come."

The event is scheduled for June 15 to 22, 2008, and coincides with the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City and the 350th anniversary of the appointment of Blessed Francois-de-Laval as Canada's first bishop.

The late Pope John Paul II visited Toronto in 2002 for World Youth Day.
