Spain: Prime Minister wants talks with ETA

MADRID, May 16 (UPI) -- Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is offering to open a dialogue with the country's Basque separatist group, ETA.

Zapatero's socialist government is preparing a motion for debate in the parliament that would open talks with ETA, El Mundo reported Monday.

Opponents of the president say the talks will weaken Spain's hand with the group.

Opposition leader Mariano Rajoy said Zapatero's proposal was akin to "surrendering parliament" to the ETA.

On Sunday four bombs exploded in Spain's Basque region, injuring three people. Spanish authorities blamed ETA.

The ETA has been blamed for more than 800 deaths since its fight for independence began in the 1960s.
