WASHINGTON, May 13 (UPI) -- Explosives detection security has been beefed up at Los Angeles International Airport, the Transportation Security Administration announced.

The TSA said it has just installed a new explosives detection trace portal that will be used to screen passengers at LAX Terminal One. The equipment is part of a pilot program to test and evaluate the trace portal for screening passengers for explosives.

"By adding this new technology, LAX remains on the cutting edge of post-9/11 security," said Larry Fetters, TSA Federal Security Director. "The new explosives detection trace portal adds another important layer of security here at LAX."

The TSA said that LAX now joins San Francisco; San Diego; Tampa; John F. Kennedy airport in New York; Baltimore-Washington International airport; Las Vegas; Miami; Gulfport-Biloxi, Miss.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Providence, R.I.; Rochester, N.Y.; and Phoenix as airports employing the new technology.

The TSA has allocated $28.3 million to buy and install another 147 trace portals. TSA is also developing a deployment plan to have the equipment in airports by January 2006. Once the plans are finalized, TSA says that it will announce the next group of airports to receive the equipment.
