Kirchner leaves summit early

BRASILIA, Brazil, May 11 (UPI) -- Argentine President Nestor Kirchner left the South American-Arab summit, causing widespread speculation about Argentine-Brazil relations.

Kirchner met with his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the meeting to discuss trade between the nations then left Tuesday. Following his departure, Brazilian officials said the talks were productive.

However, Kirchner's departure annoyed some Brazilian leaders, Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper reported Wednesday. The summit concludes Wednesday.

Earlier this month, Kirchner reportedly groused about Brazil's penchant for assuming the leadership for Latin America when it comes to international issues.
