Runaway bride may face charges

GAINESVILLE, Ga., May 9 (UPI) -- Gwinnett County, Ga., District Attorney Danny Porter says he is examining evidence for possible charges against runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks.

Her attorney, former Hall County District Aggorney Lydia Sartain, said charges should not be necessary, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday.

"She is deeply regretful of the pain she caused her family, her fiancé, her friends and the community who rallied to her aid," Sartain said. "I believe Jennifer committed no crime."

Sartain had prosecuted Wilbanks three times from 1996-1998 for shoplifting. In 1996 she performed 75 hours community service and paid $1,700 restitution, and in 1998 she served two weekends in jail, paid a $400 fine and did 50 hours community service.

Wilbanks, 32, disappeared last week, just days before her wedding to John Mason. She went to Dallas and Las Vegas before calling police from Alburquerque.

Her story of being kidnapped and raped turned out to be bogus. She has been in seclusion since her return.
