Chile suspends rights abuse deadline

SANTIAGO, Chile, May 6 (UPI) -- Chile suspended the deadline Friday for investigations into alleged human rights abuses dating back to the days of the 1973-1990 dictatorship.

The Supreme Court decided to suspend the deadline due to the numerous ongoing investigations into abuses. The original deadline was scheduled for July 25.

Many of the cases involved former Chilean strongman Gen. Augusto Pinochet, who led the 1973 coup and has been accused of corruption, embezzlement of state funds and rights abuses.

During Pinochet's rule, an estimated 3,000 Chileans were killed or disappeared.

The 89-year-old former dictator also faces numerous charges in connection with Operation Condor, the agreement among Latin American dictatorships during the 1970's and 1980's to hunt down political adversaries across borders.
