Former FBI agent indicted in 1982 slaying

MIAMI, May 5 (UPI) -- A former FBI agent imprisoned on racketeering and obstruction of justice charges was indicted in the 1982 death of a Miami Jai-alai executive.

A Miami-Dade County grand jury indicted John J. Connolly, 64, Wednesday for the slaying of John B. Callahan, an officer of the Miami Jai-alai fronton.

Court records show Connally was also implicated in the slaying of Roger Wheeler, who had owned two frontons.

The indictment said Connally conspired to kill Callahan and the slaying was carried out by James "Whitey" Bulger, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi and John Martorano.

Flemmi has been sentenced to life in prison for 10 murders and Martorano sentenced to 14 years, after cooperating in several investigations. Bulger is still at large.

"Connolly never pulled the trigger, but his information was the guiding hand that led to their deaths," said State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle.

The indictment said those involved in the slayings were members of Boston's "Winter Hill" gang.
