The Brazilian leader has been pressuring the United Nations and member countries to back its candidacy for a council seat.

During her recent visit to Brazil, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice remained uncommitted to endorsing Brazil's candidacy.

India and Japan are among the other nations seeking permanent Security Council membership.
