Iraq decides on new cabinet

BAGHDAD, April 27 (UPI) -- Iraqi political factions Wednesday reportedly ended months of wrangling and agreed on the makeup of a new cabinet.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, who made the announcement, declined to reveal the cabinet members. Their names must be submitted for approval to President Jalal Talabani and gain a simple majority in the National Assembly, the New York Times reported. Each of those steps, however, is believed to be assured.

Jaafari's announcement came after last-minute negotiations with a Sunni political party led by Sheik Ghazi Yawar, who was named last month as one of two vice presidents in the new government.

Negotiations appeared to center on who would be named defense minister, a post expected to go to Sadoun Dulaymi, a former general in Saddam Hussein's army, who fled before Hussein's ouster in the spring of 2003.
