Ecuador sacks Gutierrez appointees

QUITO, Ecuador, April 27 (UPI) -- Ecuadorian lawmakers have fired all state officials who were appointed by the nation's former president, ETV Telerama reported Wednesday.

The move marked the first action by Congress since it voted last week to oust President Lucio Gutierrez and replace him with Vice-President Alfredo Palacio.

The lawmakers also voted to remove from office 11 deputies said to be allies of Gutierrez, El Comerico reported.

Gutierrez was voted out of office because of numerous allegations of corruption and political mismanagement. The former president is currently in Brazil, where he is expected to request asylum.

Three Ecuadorian presidents have been forced from office since 1997.

No South American countries have yet recognized the Palacio administration.
